New Help in Thornton for Graffiti Problems

There is new help available for some Thornton homeowners who are frustrated by graffiti. Graffiti vandals use paint to leave their marks, and in the past, it was up to the homeowner to clean up the mess. But recently, Thornton’s City Council passed an ordinance that allows City staffers to remove graffiti from some private property at no cost to the owner. Residential and commercial fences, retaining walls, garages and sheds that are adjacent to City streets, alleys, parks and trails are eligible for this program.

"It’s part of an effort to better serve our residents," says Code Compliance Supervisor Robin Brown. "We want clean, safe, and pretty neighborhoods, too."

Thornton also has a powerful new tool to undo the graffiti. "It's a kind of graffiti eraser," says Thornton Code Compliance Officer Barry Deese. "It's a high-pressure washer that quickly removes graffiti from just about any surface. The skate park was hit recently by graffiti vandals, we found it that morning and it was gone in a few hours. We’re able to respond a lot quicker," says Deese. Thornton’s new effort against graffiti can now help some homeowners when their property is "tagged."

For more information, call Thornton’s Graffiti Hotline at 720-977-5099. To report a graffiti problem, go to Thornton Web site's Report a Problem page and select "Graffiti/Vandalism Concerns" from the drop-down list.
